Database roles included in backups in Snowflake

You can now include database roles in schema and database backups in Snowflake.

O que mudou

Schema and database backup operations now support the inclusion of database roles. Previously, backup creation failed if the backup included a database role or an object with an ownership grant to a database role.

Use cases

Imagine you need to ensure the complete recovery of data structures along with their local permissions. With this feature, you can:

  • Protect data and their respective permissions in a single snapshot.
  • Prevent backup failures in environments that use database role-based access control.

How to use

Run standard backup management commands in your SQL session to cover your database objects.

CREATE BACKUP SET my_backup_set FOR DATABASE my_database;

What happens in this code:

  1. Snowflake initiates the creation of a backup set for the specified database.
  2. Database roles and associated objects are now included without throwing ownership restriction errors.

Limitations and requirements

  • Transient tables remain unsupported in backups.
  • Backups are stored in the same cloud service provider region as the associated object.
