Genie visualizations in Slack replies: charts in messages

Databricks Genie responses in Slack that include charts now render the visualization directly as an image in public replies. If you installed the app previously, you need to reinstall it to enable the file write permission.

Imagine you want to share a generated data chart with your team without requiring them to open the Databricks web interface.

How to use

Ensure message visibility is set to public in the channel and reinstall the Slack app if charts do not appear.

# In the Slack channel, ask your question mentioning the bot:
@Genie show monthly sales for the last quarter as a chart

What happens in this code:

1. The user mentions @Genie in a public Slack channel.
2. Genie processes the question using Unity Catalog permissions.
3. The reply is delivered to the channel containing both the text answer and the rendered chart image.

Limitations and requirements

• This feature is in Public Preview.
• Visualizations are only shown in public messages (private messages do not display images).
• Requires a Slack workspace administrator to reinstall the app to grant the files:write permission if it was set up prior to this release.
