Snowflake now allows including and excluding users by name in quotas

Per-user quotas in Snowflake now accept specific user names for direct inclusion or exclusion, overriding tag-based scopes.

O que mudou

Use cases

Imagine you need to monitor team costs while ensuring a specific employee is tracked regardless of their tags, or that another is ignored. With this update, you can:

  • Add specific users by name with greater precision.
  • Exclude specific users by name, overriding tag rules.
  • Define individual exceptions that take precedence over the quota's general tag scope.

How to use

You can use direct inclusion and exclusion methods via SQL commands called on your quota.

CALL my_quota!INCLUDE_USERS(['ALICE', 'BOB']);
CALL my_quota!EXCLUDE_USERS('USER', ['CAROL']);

What happens in this code:

  1. The INCLUDE_USERS command adds users ALICE and BOB directly to the quota monitoring scope.
  2. The EXCLUDE_USERS command with the 'USER' argument removes user CAROL from the scope, even if she has the monitored tags.

Limitations and requirements

  • Generally available (GA).
  • Direct user naming takes precedence over the quota's tag scope.
  • Calling these methods appends users to the existing list rather than replacing it.
  • To clear the list of included or excluded users, pass an empty array such as INCLUDE_USERS([]).
